Braces

Braces are fixed appliances that are used for over a period of approximately 1-2 years for the correction of crooked teeth(malalignment). After the correction, removable retainers are given for a period of about 6 months in order to retain the teeth and stabilize it in the corrected position.

This type of treatment will require the patient to visit the dentist once every month in order to change the existing wires and elastics.

Metal Braces: These are metallic braces and hence are cheaper than the ceramic ones.

Ceramic Braces: (tooth colored braces) as they are transparent they are aesthetic.

Lingual Braces is an advanced technique where the braces are placed on the inner aspect of the teeth and hence are invisible.

Damon Braces^®: These are self-ligating (attached to each- other) braces that are fitted in the same way as conventional braces to each other. Damon braces use a slide mechanism that attaches wires to brackets to move naturally with the teeth as they realign. This makes them more comfortable, better looking, and able to provide strong results in a shorter time.

Advantages over traditional braces:

• Faster treatment- As they are self-ligating they require about half the time as conventional braces.
• Less breakage-as they are self-ligating there is no fracture of popping out of braces.
• Less pain- patients reported 60% less discomfort with Damon braces.
• Less friction- avoids erosion and deterioration of the teeth.
• Lesser plaque and bacterial accumulation on the braces.

Orthodontic Treatment :

You may need an orthodontic treatment if you notice the following problems:

• Crooked or crowded teeth, spacing between the teeth, protruding upper or lower front teeth
• Upper front teeth that overlap the lower teeth too much — either vertically (overbite) or horizontally (overjet)
• Upper front teeth that bite behind the lower ones (underbite/crossbite),other jaw malalignment problems that cause an uneven bite.

Procedure :

Exam and Evaluation: Orthodontist conducts a thorough extra-oral and intra-oral exam of your facial profile, teeth, jaws and mouth. Panoramic X-ray and (Lateral Cephalometric) X-ray, Plaster models might be required.

Potential tooth extraction: If your mouth is very overcrowded, or there is less space orthodontist may recommend removing one or more permanent teeth to allow room for the remaining teeth to fit comfortably.

Monthly visits: To change your wires and elastics.

Other procedures:

In severe cases, where tooth movement alone will not correct a bite that’s significantly, jaw surgery is required in combination with orthodontics correction (orthognathic surgeries).
