TOOTH EXTRACTION

Tooth extraction is a common dental procedure in which a tooth is removed from its socket in the jawbone when it cannot be preserved or when keeping it may harm overall oral health. Dentists recommend extraction in cases such as severe tooth decay, infection, advanced gum disease, trauma (broken tooth), overcrowding, or impacted teeth like wisdom teeth. Before the procedure, the dentist performs a clinical examination and may take X-rays to assess the position of the tooth, roots, and surrounding bone.

Types of tooth extraction –

The following are two types of Tooth Extraction:

1. Simple (non-surgical) extraction

2. Surgical extraction

1. Why might I need a tooth extraction?

Extractions are recommended in cases of severe tooth decay, infection, advanced gum disease, broken teeth, overcrowding, or impacted teeth (like wisdom teeth).

2. Is the extraction procedure painful?

No, the procedure itself is not painful because the dentist numbs the area with local anesthesia. You may feel pressure or slight movement, but not pain during the extraction.

3. What should I expect after the procedure?

After the extraction, it’s normal to have mild bleeding, swelling, and discomfort for a few days. A blood clot
forms in the socket, which is important for proper healing.

4. What should I eat after a tooth extraction?

Stick to soft foods like yogurt, soups, smoothies, and mashed foods for the first few days. Avoid hot, spicy, or crunchy foods that can irritate the area.

5. How long does it take to recover?

Initial healing usually takes about 1–2 weeks, but complete healing of the bone and tissue may take a few weeks longer.
