Root Canal Treatment (RCT)
Root canal treatment is a procedure where the nerve and blood supply of the affected tooth is cut off and the canals are cleaned and cleared off the soft living tissue are then replaced and sealed with a compatible inert material.
When is an RCT advised? A root canal treatment is advised when decay spreads and reaches the nerves (soft tissue), or when the nerve is exposed due to fracture or other reasons.

Root Canal Infection:
Tooth Decay: Tooth decay is a major cause of root canal infection.
Secondary infection: Previously restored teeth can undergo decay again due to shrinkage of old restorations. Such decay can remain unnoticed until the soft tissue is affected and the patient begins to feel sensitivity or pain.
Trauma: Injury to a tooth may result from a fall, road accidents, or from previous dental procedures. In some of these cases, symptoms may not be evident immediately. Such a tooth may eventually become discolored in the course of time.
Other causes: Habits such as grinding of teeth can wear out the teeth to such an extent that the soft tissue is affected. Other factors like gastric reflux (acidity), regular use of acidic drinks and foodstuff can also wear out the teeth and eventually affects the soft tissue.
RCT Procedure:
The tooth to be root canal treated is first anesthetized. Then the tooth is drilled in order to access the root canal/canals. The canal/s is cleared off all debris, the soft tissue is removed completely, and the canal/s is then shaped and dried thoroughly. The latest advancements in technology are used to ensure that the canal is completely cleared of all debris and that the sealant has reached the apex of the root. Then, the canal is sealed with a suitable material. The tooth is then restored with a suitable dental restorative material. Lastly, the tooth is covered with a crown as root canal treated teeth have a compromised structure and are not as strong as other teeth.
